Ladakh ("land of high passes") is a high-altitude region in northern India that spans the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges and is dotted with small fertile valleys where people have lived with limited resources for centuries. Most of Ladakh lies at an elevation of over 11,000 feet, making it one of the highest and coldest inhabited regions on earth. Traditionally a part of Western Tibet, Ladakh is a geography of sacred places and home to a thriving Buddhist culture.
